Wearing your Aligners
Invisalign is a form of aligner therapy. It consists of a series of clear aligners that move the teeth when worn as prescribed.
Invisalign only works when you are wearing the aligners. They should be worn 22 hours each day to achieve the maximum movement prescribed in each aligner. (The two off-hours are allotted for eating and brushing your teeth).
There are no food restrictions with Invisalign; however, the aligners should not be in when you’re eating.
Aligners may be worn when drinking water or cool clear liquids. Always brush your aligners and teeth if you drink anything other than water. Fluids other than water will get inside the aligner and get held against your teeth. If this occurs for a prolonged time, it can cause staining or damage to the teeth.
Aligners are generally changed once every week. Some patients may be instructed to change them every two weeks. It is critical that you never switch to the next aligner in less than the directed time. Even if the aligners feel loose, the roots of your teeth are still aligning.
If you miss a few days of wearing your aligners for any reason, pick up where you left off and wear the current aligners for a full week. If they are too tight, insert your “back-up aligners” and wear them for one week, then continue with current aligners from there.

Storing your Aligners
Always place your aligners in the cases we provide. Never place them in a napkin or in your pocket.
Please keep your aligners away from pets. They often like to use them as chew toys.
We recommend that you always keep the set of aligners you’ve just completed in your red case at home. These will serve as your “back-up aligners” in the event you misplace your current ones.
If you do misplace your aligners, please call the office right away and wear your previous aligner.
Each Invisalign aligner is individually packaged and numbered. The number is located on the upper and lower right 1st molar region of the aligner. If you mix up your aligners, you may place one on a white piece of paper to see the numbers clearly.

Caring for your Aligners
Clean your aligners prior to each insertion. You can use a normal toothbrush. Rinse under running water and brush with mild soap until clean.
Do not use denture cleaners. They may stain your aligners.
Do not place your aligners in boiling or hot water. This can damage them.

Aligner Chewies
Dr. Khan provides Aligner Chewies to all patients who undergo aligner therapy. Chewies are an integral part of aligner treatment.
An Aligner Chewie is a small cylinder made of soft, spongy, plastic-like material called Styrene Copolymer. It looks like a small roll of gauze or cotton.
You can use Aligner Chewies to close any air gaps between your teeth and your aligners. When you get a new set of aligner trays, it is essential that they fit tightly against your teeth. Biting on Chewies enables the aligners to engage optimally, which helps your treatment progress along.
To use an Aligner Chewie, position it between your teeth (either “long way” or “short way”) and bite down. Quickly move the Chewie from one end of your mouth to another, while continuing to bite up and down, until you have bitten on it with all your teeth. Then go back and do it again, and keep repeating the process.
You should be using the Chewies for 20 minutes a day, either consecutively or broken up throughout the day. Using them for a few minutes before you go to sleep will help your aligner tray stay well seated and tight against your teeth while you are sleeping.
Aligner Chewies are reusable, to a point. You can wash them with mild soap and re-use them several times before they will lose their elasticity. We recommend that you wash them after each biting session.
